September Feature Special: World War II books
This month we highlight the books we have covering the Second World War which began in September 1939 and ended in September 1945.
Our collection of World War 2 books are factual accounts including the Naval contribution, from both Allies and Axis forces. The intelligence gathered by the Admiralty’s Operational Intelligence Centre (OIC). Covering the Battle for Norway, the Finnish victory against the Soviet Union (the Winter War), Japan – Pearl Harbour and the Battle for Maginot Line, the role of Malta in the Mediterranean Theatre “The key to our position in the whole Mediterranean lay in Malta” Marshal of the Royal Air Force, Arthur William Tedder.
Missions by a small Kent territorial army unit to deny the Nazis oil. The heroic airman of Biggin Hill and the role of civilian airlines during Ww2. The memoirs of a Second World War Airman – W J “Jim” Hunter, who was shot down in July 1941 and spent four years as a POW. Training exercises at Slapton Sands (South Devon) – where the Americans trained for the D-Day landings, 20,000 acres of prime agricultural land were requisitioned. 180 farms, 28 shops and 3,000 residents were expelled from the area.
