Williams's thoughtful engagement with the physical processes or drawing goes beyond a sensible and chatty account of materials...and demonstrations of the infinite variety of marks that pencil, pen and charcoal can make. He considers the posture one should adopt...He points to the advantages of using oneself as a model...He has a word to say about morale, and the state of mind one should cultivate; but here as elsewhere he is not prescriptive. He has a refreshingly broad view of the approaches to drawing...Above all, Williams insists that everything depends on endless practice...He doesn't quote the famous Latin tag 'Nulla dies sine linea' (no day without a line) but that might be the epigraph for this thoroughly engaging book. He doesn't claim that the journey is easy; but he certainly succeeds in provoking the wish to go out there and do it.
