The National Portrait Gallery, London, holds a large collection of portraits of writers who have played and important role in British history and culture, from the late Middle Ages through to the modern day. The one hundred writers brought together in this book include famous and influential poets, authors and essayists, from Geoffrey Chaucer to Malala Yousafzai. All of the writers illustrated are accompanied by a short list of notable publications, highlighting their most acclaimed works, and a selection of portraits also include quotations on the them of writing, drawn from journals, interviews and the sitters' key texts.
